Which serial port hardware do you recommend for best accuracy in Docklight Monitoring Mode (full duplex monitoring)?

Applies to: Docklight (all versions), Article ID: dl_faq025

Docklight works very well with any standard RS232/RS422/RS485 communication hardware, but it is very difficult to specify the individual performance and accuracy. It is largely determined by your actual hardware and software configuration. In particular, USB devices introduce unspecified delays and latency times.

Our recommendations are:

1) Use our “Docklight Tap” RS232 data tap for USB. Docklight Tap is designed for low latency and high monitoring accuracy, and Docklight has built-in support for fast and direct access to the monitoring data. This allows full-duplex RS232 monitoring applications with much higher precision compared to standard USB-to-Serial accessories.

2) For advanced monitoring application with high data rates, or where high time-tagging accuracy is required, choose our “Docklight Tap Pro” or “Docklight Tap 485” hardware. Docklight Tap Pro/485 use their own embedded time provider and eliminate PC-based inaccuracies altogether.
